A Texas family was left devastated on Thanksgiving night when a husband repeatedly shot and killed his wife, police said.

The League City Police Department was called to the 2300 block of Indigo Harbour Lane, where “multiple gunshots” were fired. When their criminal investigation division arrived, Dudley Bernard was in the front yard of the home and his wife, Chauntelle Bernard was dead at the front door, according to a statement Friday by the League City Police Department.

Bernard was charged by the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office with murder and is currently held in jail on $200,000 bond, online records confirmed.

The 42-year-old woman and her 40-year-old husband were both employed with the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The couple were both employed with the government agency since 2008, according to a CBP spokeswoman.

The weekend after Thanksgiving is already a nightmare for travel, no matter the weather. But storm systems are likely to snarl travel even further across wide swaths of the United States at the end of the holiday weekend.

Heading into Sunday — one of the busiest travel days of the year — there are two major storm systems that forecasters are concerned about, says National Weather Service meteorologist Lara Pagano.

One pummeling the Great Plains region at the moment is forecast to move east and impact travel into the Northeast by Sunday, she says.

“We’re seeing travel impacts for the Upper Midwest into the Great Lakes, and then that’s going to transition into portions of the Northeast for wintry precipitation as we get through the remainder of Sunday, Sunday night and then getting into Monday as well,” says Pagano. The Great Lakes region is going to see “significant snow and blizzard conditions that will continue into early tomorrow.”

Pagano says that early in the day on Sunday, snow and high winds are likely to make travel difficult across much of the region. Parts of the Northern Plains into Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin could see snowfall of 6 to 12 inches, according to the National Weather Service, with some areas seeing as much as a foot and a half of snow.

And as the storm moves east, travel into and out of East Coast destinations such as New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts on Sunday evening may be affected. This is the same storm that caused problems on the West Coast earlier in the week, which is why forecasters are calling it a coast-to-coast storm.

The second system likely to complicate travel is bearing down on the West Coast.

“It’s just this plume of moisture that’s moving into, around San Francisco Bay region and the coastal region, and it’s really helping to squeeze out a lot of that precipitation,” Pagano says.

Portions of Northern California and Nevada are under winter storm watches or warnings, with NWS Sacramento saying that “travel is highly discouraged” between Saturday morning and Monday evening. The Sierra Nevada could see up to 2 feet of snow at elevations above 6,000 feet, with even higher snowfall at the highest elevations.

Huge amounts of travel have been predicted this holiday weekend. Nearly 32 million airline passengers were projected to take flights between Nov. 22 and Dec. 3, according to the trade organization Airlines for America. That represents a 3.7% increase over last year and an all-time record, according to the group’s calculations.

According to FlightAware, more than 225 U.S. flights had been canceled and more than 2,000 delayed on Saturday alone as of early afternoon.

About 49 million people are also expected to have traveled by car for the Thanksgiving holiday, according to an estimate by AAA.

Conditions are finally improving in other parts of the country — for example, the town of Tusayan, Ariz., which is right by the south rim of the Grand Canyon. After a storm of heavy, wet snow on Thanksgiving night knocked out power, the town declared a state of emergency and set up a shelter.

“Without electricity, not only was there no heat in most homes and hotels but food service was limited,” the town’s mayor, Craig Sanderson, told NPR. It was hard for emergency workers to locate the source of the problem because of the heavy snow and low visibility, though the power eventually was restored early Saturday.

Sanderson added that “we expect everything to be mostly back to normal here in Tusayan by the end of the day.” And tourists who were stuck inside during the holiday weekend will be treated to a spectacular sight. While airplane tours of the Grand Canyon are not operating, Sanderson says helicopter tours are taking off — and it “will be an amazing view from the air or ground with the snow down in the canyon.”

Two hikers in their 60s fall to their deaths at Arches National Park in Utah

A pair of tourists in their 60s fell to their deaths while hiking in a popular area of Arches National Park in Utah.

A 30-year-old man was also injured in the fall, which occurred amid wet and slick conditions Friday morning, Arches National Park Chief Ranger Scott Brown said.

Authorities responded to the bowl area under the popular Delicate Arch around 7:30 a.m., the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. When they arrived on the scene, they discovered a 60-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man dead from their injuries.

The younger victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said. His condition is unknown at this time.

All three individuals, who authorities believe are related, were visiting the area from California.

Brown told KSL-TV the cause of the deadly fall is still under investigation, but noted a wintry mix of rain and snow on the trail when the incident occurred.

Arches National Park, known for its more than 2,000 stone arches, closed down Delicate Arch but reopened it about six hours later. The natural attraction is a “widely recognized symbol of the state of Utah and one of the most famous geological features in the world,” according the National Park Service website.

Firefall: This is a picture of the Horse tail waterfall in Yosemite. Every year for two weeks in February, the sun sets at a certain angle that illuminates the waterfall in luminescent orange and red making it look like a liquid fire. There are a number of conditions that need to be met to make this happen (enough snow, warm temperatures to melt that snow, and clear skies). I met photographers who said that they have been coming for 11 years only to see this happen 2 or 3 times.

Ilhan Omars opponent banned from Twitter after suggesting congresswoman should be hanged

Twitter permanently banned Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Republican opponent on Friday after she accused the Minnesota congresswoman of treason and wrote on the platform that Omar should be hanged.

Danielle Stella, a candidate hoping to challenge Omar for her Minnesota seat in the 2020 election, tweeted earlier this week, “If it is proven @IlhanMN passed sensitive info to Iran, she should be tried for #treason and hanged.”

The post that followed included a crude drawing of a body hanging from gallows with a link to a right-wing website on her belief that Omar should be hanged if a conspiracy that Omar provided sensitive intelligence to Qatar and Iran were true.

NBC News has found no evidence that support this claim, but Stella is also a known purveyor of the far-right fringe QAnon conspiracy theory.

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed on Saturday that Stella had been permanently banned from the platform but did not specify why.

“The accounts were permanently suspended for repeated violations of the Twitter Rules,” the spokesperson said over email, referring to the candidate’s campaign and personal accounts.

After receiving considerable backlash for the posts, Stella defended herself on Facebook. She claimed that she had not threatened Omar.

“Breathe, think this through, logically. To clarify, I said, ‘If it is proven ____ passed sensitive info to Iran, she should be tried for #treason and hanged,’ Stella wrote on Facebook, leaving a blank space where Omar’s Twitter handle had been. “Treason is the only thing mentioned in the constitution for the death penalty, punishable by hanging or firing squad. I believe all involved should be thoroughly investigated. I did not threaten anyone.”

Stella did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News.

Omar responded to Stella’s comments on Twitter, stating that the Republican candidate’s latest statements only expands on dangerous political rhetoric that can lead to threats and harm.

“This is the natural result of a political environment where anti-Muslim dogwhistles and dehumanization are normalized by an entire political party and its media outlets,” Omar wrote on Twitter. “Violent rhetoric inevitably leads to violent threats, and ultimately, violent acts.”

Omar has received a number of death threats since winning her seat in the 2018 midterms. President Donald Trump has often taken abusive swipes at the congresswoman on Twitter, which has caused Democrats to accuse him of trying to incite violence against the Muslim lawmaker.

A New York man pleaded guilty on Nov. 18 to threatening to kill Omar in a March call to her office. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.

Rep. Dingell on impeachment push: Nobody is above the law

Michigan Congresswoman Debbie Dingell said Saturday that she hopes President Trump will participate in upcoming House Judiciary Committee impeachment hearings, but that nobody is above the rule of law.

Appearing on “Cavuto LIVE” with guest host Charles Payne, the Democrat said that she is worried about the effect of nationwide division over impeachment in addition to Russia’s influence in destabilizing democracies around the world.

The second phase of House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry begins next week. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., announced plans for a hearing on Wednesday to weigh whether the president’s actions reach a level of “high crimes and misdemeanors” and warrant articles of impeachment.

In a new Quinnipiac University poll, 48 percent of voters said the president should not be impeached and removed while 45 percent say he should.

“I think those numbers reflect probably what I hear as I am out and about,” she said.

“I want to read the Intelligence Committee report. I want to see what happens. I hope the president does participate in the Judiciary Committee hearings — that he has his counsel there. So, we see a fair, open, transparent process…and then I’ll make my decision,” said Dingell.

Dingell told Payne that she believes “some of this has probably been caused by some of the actions that [Russia has] taken.” She noted that “many Republicans” have said the president’s actions in dealings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky were inappropriate.

In public testimony earlier this month, European Union Ambassador Gordon Sondland tied top Trump administration officials to the “potential quid pro quo” involving U.S. military aid to Ukraine and investigations desired by the president, saying, “Everyone was in the loop.” However, Sondland also testified he never heard the president himself mention any preconditions involving Ukraine.

Still, Sondland said he pursued requests for Ukraine probes at the “express direction” of the president, which President Trump has vehemently refuted.

“Protecting our national security, protecting our democracy matters. So, at what point do you say, ‘Well, you can just keep doing anything you want?’ Or, do you have to say ‘you are endangering our democracy? You are threatening national security.'”

Fall during Delicate Arch hike in Utah kills 2, injures 1

A hike to Utah’s iconic Delicate Arch turned tragic when three hikers fell and two of them were killed.

The arch sits on the edge of a sandstone bowl with steep slopes, and authorities said the three fell into that bowl at about 7:30 a.m. Friday.

“It appears they were all from California and that they may be related,” the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “Authorities are currently investigating and more information will be released as it becomes available.”

The victims were a 65-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman, the news release said.

The survivor was a 30-year-old man. He was taken to the hospital by helicopter.

Chief Ranger Scott Brown told KSL-TV the cause of the fall was not known, though the trail was wet and slick at the time of the incident.

Rangers closed Delicate Arch Trail temporarily following the incident but reopened later that evening, The Washington Post reported. Park officials said in a tweet that winter conditions have caused slippery hiking and warned visitors to proceed with caution.

Metropolitan Police in London have confirmed that 28-year-old Usman Khan was the attacker who killed two people and wounded three others with a knife on London Bridge Friday before police shot and killed him.

Khan had been living in the Staffordshire area, north of Birmingham, police said. They said Khan had been known to authorities in Britain, having been convicted in 2012 for “terrorism offenses. ”

According to The Guardian in a 2012 article, Khan had been part of a nine-person plot to bomb the London Stock Exchange and build a training camp for terrorists. Although he had originally been sentenced to prison for public protection — an indefinite term until a parole board decided he was no longer a threat — his sentence was revised in 2013 to 16 years with an eight-year minimum, The Guardian reported.

Police said they are not actively seeking any other individuals connected to Saturday’s attack, and have confirmed that it was being investigated as a terrorist incident.

“[Khan] had been released a year ago on the provision that he had agreed to wear an electronic tag, submit to curfews and restrictions to his movements,” Lucy Fisher, defense editor of The Times in London, said in an interview on NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday morning. Khan had been released on licence, Britain’s equivalent of parole, serving only eight years of his 16-year sentence.

“And it was while he was subject to these conditions that he performed this horrific attack yesterday,” Fisher said.

Police said they were called to Fishmonger’s Hall shortly before 2 p.m., where Khan had attended a conference on criminal justice and prisoner rehabilitation, called “Learning Together,” run by the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Criminology. Khan had been wearing a fake suicide vest, police said, adding that the attack started inside Fishmonger’s Hall. Khan stabbed “a number of people” inside the hall, police said, and The Times reported that one of the two killed died inside the hall.

“I am devastated to learn that today’s hateful attack on London Bridge may have been targeted at staff, students and alumni,” University of Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Stephen Toope said in a statement posted online.

Police said Khan then left the building and moved to London Bridge, where he continued his attack before being apprehended by bystanders, one armed with narwhal tusk, another with a fire extinguisher. Videos of the attack posted online show Khan being sprayed by a fire extinguisher as another man jabs forward with the tusk.

As Khan is tackled to the ground, a third individual wrestles the knife out of Khan’s hands and backs away, with police closing in with their guns out. They drag a bystander off of Khan, then shoot and kill Khan. London Bridge and the surrounding area remains closed on Saturday, and police are asking anyone who was present at Fishmonger’s Hall to come forward with any information.

Amy Coop, a director who attended the Learning Together conference, tweeted that the tusk, 5 ft. in length and one of a pair flanking the entrance doors, had been taken off the wall by a man who rushed out of Fishmonger’s Hall to follow Khan.

The Times reported that the tusk-wielder was a Polish man who had worked at Fishmonger’s Hall, “setting up events and managing porters.” The identity of the other individual with the fire extinguisher, or the origin of the extinguisher, is not known at this time.

Those individuals who intervened to stop the attacker were lauded by both the public and British leadership, earning recognition from Queen Elizabeth II on down.

Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, said on BBC Breakfast that the civilians who intervened had no idea if the suicide vest was real or not.

“They ran towards him, to stop him from hurting other people. And I’m so proud, and we should all be really proud, of these people,” Khan said.

In an interview on Sky News, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that those individuals represent “the best of our country.”

Metropolitan Police Chief Cressida Dick echoed Johnson and Khan’s sentiments in an interview near London Bridge Saturday morning.

“It’s a terrible thing that people found themselves in that position, but as we saw the worst of humankind, we also saw the very best of human spirit and of London,” Dick said.

Friday’s attack reminded many of the 2017 London terrorist attacks. In March 2017, a car jumped the sidewalk on Westminster Bridge, killing five before the driver jumped out and stabbed a police officer to death. The driver was then shot and killed by another police officer.

In June 2017, a van plowed through pedestrians on London Bridge and crashed outside a pub on the south bank of the Thames, a short walk from Fishmonger’s Hall. The rampage continued as three attackers got out of the van, pursuing and stabbing people, killing eight and wounding 48. The attackers had also been wearing fake suicide vests, and were killed by police. ISIS had claimed responsibility for the June attacks.

With the country’s general election scheduled on Dec. 12, a showdown between Johnson’s Conservative Party and Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party, Britain’s leadership and justice system now grapples with the question: how was a convicted terrorist released from prison eight years early, and how was he able to carry out this attack with an ankle bracelet monitoring his movements?

“For the Conservatives, there will be questions for the Home Secretary about why, only three weeks ago, she reduced the terror threat in the U.K. from severe to substantial,” Fisher said, adding that cuts to police numbers could have had an impact on their surveillance of Khan.

And in the Labour Party, Fisher said Corbyn has faced scrutiny over his vague stances on questions of national security.

“This week, he was asked in an interview six times whether he would ever be prepared to give the order to kill a terrorist if that terrorist could not be safely apprehended,” Fisher said. “Six times he refused to say if he would give that kill order.”

“In the minds of voters, there are questions about how secure the nation would be in his hands if he became prime minister,” Fisher said.
