The weekend after Thanksgiving is already a nightmare for travel, no matter the weather. But storm systems are likely to snarl travel even further across wide swaths of the United States at the end of the holiday weekend.

Heading into Sunday — one of the busiest travel days of the year — there are two major storm systems that forecasters are concerned about, says National Weather Service meteorologist Lara Pagano.

One pummeling the Great Plains region at the moment is forecast to move east and impact travel into the Northeast by Sunday, she says.

“We’re seeing travel impacts for the Upper Midwest into the Great Lakes, and then that’s going to transition into portions of the Northeast for wintry precipitation as we get through the remainder of Sunday, Sunday night and then getting into Monday as well,” says Pagano. The Great Lakes region is going to see “significant snow and blizzard conditions that will continue into early tomorrow.”

Pagano says that early in the day on Sunday, snow and high winds are likely to make travel difficult across much of the region. Parts of the Northern Plains into Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin could see snowfall of 6 to 12 inches, according to the National Weather Service, with some areas seeing as much as a foot and a half of snow.

And as the storm moves east, travel into and out of East Coast destinations such as New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts on Sunday evening may be affected. This is the same storm that caused problems on the West Coast earlier in the week, which is why forecasters are calling it a coast-to-coast storm.

The second system likely to complicate travel is bearing down on the West Coast.

“It’s just this plume of moisture that’s moving into, around San Francisco Bay region and the coastal region, and it’s really helping to squeeze out a lot of that precipitation,” Pagano says.

Portions of Northern California and Nevada are under winter storm watches or warnings, with NWS Sacramento saying that “travel is highly discouraged” between Saturday morning and Monday evening. The Sierra Nevada could see up to 2 feet of snow at elevations above 6,000 feet, with even higher snowfall at the highest elevations.

Huge amounts of travel have been predicted this holiday weekend. Nearly 32 million airline passengers were projected to take flights between Nov. 22 and Dec. 3, according to the trade organization Airlines for America. That represents a 3.7% increase over last year and an all-time record, according to the group’s calculations.

According to FlightAware, more than 225 U.S. flights had been canceled and more than 2,000 delayed on Saturday alone as of early afternoon.

About 49 million people are also expected to have traveled by car for the Thanksgiving holiday, according to an estimate by AAA.

Conditions are finally improving in other parts of the country — for example, the town of Tusayan, Ariz., which is right by the south rim of the Grand Canyon. After a storm of heavy, wet snow on Thanksgiving night knocked out power, the town declared a state of emergency and set up a shelter.

“Without electricity, not only was there no heat in most homes and hotels but food service was limited,” the town’s mayor, Craig Sanderson, told NPR. It was hard for emergency workers to locate the source of the problem because of the heavy snow and low visibility, though the power eventually was restored early Saturday.

Sanderson added that “we expect everything to be mostly back to normal here in Tusayan by the end of the day.” And tourists who were stuck inside during the holiday weekend will be treated to a spectacular sight. While airplane tours of the Grand Canyon are not operating, Sanderson says helicopter tours are taking off — and it “will be an amazing view from the air or ground with the snow down in the canyon.”

A pair of tourists in their 60s fell to their deaths while hiking in a popular area of Arches National Park in Utah.

A 30-year-old man was also injured in the fall, which occurred amid wet and slick conditions Friday morning, Arches National Park Chief Ranger Scott Brown said.

Authorities responded to the bowl area under the popular Delicate Arch around 7:30 a.m., the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. When they arrived on the scene, they discovered a 60-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man dead from their injuries.

The younger victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said. His condition is unknown at this time.

All three individuals, who authorities believe are related, were visiting the area from California.

Brown told KSL-TV the cause of the deadly fall is still under investigation, but noted a wintry mix of rain and snow on the trail when the incident occurred.

Arches National Park, known for its more than 2,000 stone arches, closed down Delicate Arch but reopened it about six hours later. The natural attraction is a “widely recognized symbol of the state of Utah and one of the most famous geological features in the world,” according the National Park Service website.

Michigan Congresswoman Debbie Dingell said Saturday that she hopes President Trump will participate in upcoming House Judiciary Committee impeachment hearings, but that nobody is above the rule of law.

Appearing on “Cavuto LIVE” with guest host Charles Payne, the Democrat said that she is worried about the effect of nationwide division over impeachment in addition to Russia’s influence in destabilizing democracies around the world.

The second phase of House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry begins next week. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., announced plans for a hearing on Wednesday to weigh whether the president’s actions reach a level of “high crimes and misdemeanors” and warrant articles of impeachment.

In a new Quinnipiac University poll, 48 percent of voters said the president should not be impeached and removed while 45 percent say he should.

“I think those numbers reflect probably what I hear as I am out and about,” she said.

“I want to read the Intelligence Committee report. I want to see what happens. I hope the president does participate in the Judiciary Committee hearings — that he has his counsel there. So, we see a fair, open, transparent process…and then I’ll make my decision,” said Dingell.

Dingell told Payne that she believes “some of this has probably been caused by some of the actions that [Russia has] taken.” She noted that “many Republicans” have said the president’s actions in dealings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky were inappropriate.

In public testimony earlier this month, European Union Ambassador Gordon Sondland tied top Trump administration officials to the “potential quid pro quo” involving U.S. military aid to Ukraine and investigations desired by the president, saying, “Everyone was in the loop.” However, Sondland also testified he never heard the president himself mention any preconditions involving Ukraine.

Still, Sondland said he pursued requests for Ukraine probes at the “express direction” of the president, which President Trump has vehemently refuted.

“I do know that when I take that oath of office, my job is to protect our national security and our democracy. And, I am very worried about things that are happening,” she said. “So, it’s a tough decision and I don’t think that it’s good that it is just a partisan vote.

“Protecting our national security, protecting our democracy matters. So, at what point do you say, ‘Well, you can just keep doing anything you want?’ Or, do you have to say ‘you are endangering our democracy? You are threatening national security.'”

A hike to Utah’s iconic Delicate Arch turned tragic when three hikers fell and two of them were killed.

The arch sits on the edge of a sandstone bowl with steep slopes, and authorities said the three fell into that bowl at about 7:30 a.m. Friday.

“It appears they were all from California and that they may be related,” the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “Authorities are currently investigating and more information will be released as it becomes available.”

The victims were a 65-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman, the news release said.

The survivor was a 30-year-old man. He was taken to the hospital by helicopter.

Chief Ranger Scott Brown told KSL-TV the cause of the fall was not known, though the trail was wet and slick at the time of the incident.

Rangers closed Delicate Arch Trail temporarily following the incident but reopened later that evening, The Washington Post reported. Park officials said in a tweet that winter conditions have caused slippery hiking and warned visitors to proceed with caution.

“People come from all over the world to visit Arches National Park, and visiting Delicate Arch is on the top of many visitors’ to-do lists,” the National Park Service says on its website.

The trail to see Delicate Arch up close and personal is 3 miles roundtrip and climbs 480 feet, according to the park service.

At the end of the trail hikers follow a narrow rock ledge with exposure to heights.

“Rangers frequently rescue people who underestimated the trail’s difficulty,” the park service says.
